The vessel and crew came through many ordeals: from encounters with whales to endless calms and raging storms. On the 7th of August 1947, the Kon-Tiki ended its 7000km sail on the atoll of Raroia in French Polynesia. In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl 's Kon-Tiki raft arrived in Raroia after its 101-day journey from South America. Later, one of the crew members, Bengt Danielsson, lived there and studied the economy and the society. He wrote some books about Raroia, notably his thesis Work and Life on Raroia (Uppsala, 1955). Kon-Tiki Raroia is probably most famous for being the atoll where Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki raft shipwrecked in 1947. There’s a memorial on the island near to the shipwreck site, so we set off in the dinghy to find it before we got battered by the next blast of wind.
